My Day With SLAX

Post-post disclaimer: I described here my experiences with SLAX 4.2. New SLAX 5 is much better and can e.g. switch automounting off. Also the paragraph on fsck is not true, because SLAX does not use it. Strange things happen in my head.

Several weeks ago I burned SLAX, the live Linux, onto a CD. I wanted to try it, but because my Slackware was working well I did not have to. But, suddenly, the opportunity was there: my hard drive failed.

DejaVu News I.

Welcome to the first installment of irregular DejaVu News bringing you the latest and greatest from the world of DejaVu fonts.

We did it again with 1.8

Yes, version 1.8 was released almost on time, but without any big changes, only all accents in experimental typefaces were fixed.

But at least we jumped over one percent in freshmeat.net's Popularity rank.

Mozilla Firefox: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Because Slackware switched to Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Foundation nearly abandonned Mozilla Suite I thought I'll give Firefox a try.

I Know What I Did Last Summer

These freezing days remind me of last summer when I went on a trip to Norway. Falling snow, freezing wind, temperature below zero. Oh, warm memories. I know what I did, because I had a camera. I can't show whole video (you know, my friends are shy), but here is at least short teaser (1.3 MB in size).

Fighting The SVG Beast

Whole yesterday's night I was fighting this beast. It's nice technology, but it's not big win on Linux. Either there is a beta and sometimes crashing plugin for Mozilla from Adobe or standalone Squiggle the SVG browser that comes with Batik which supports only a subset of SVG (e.g. EcmaScript support is not complete).

Hi. I Am Additional Second Second...

Tonight I saw Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Very funny family (sort of) movie. Great Jim Carrey and, which is very surprising, children I don't hate! That's very rare.

Baldie For Charlie

Charlie Kaufman won (acceptance speech - search for Monday, 28 February 2005), Kate Winslet lost (her ceremony attendance), Jim Carrey and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were not nominated. Well, at least one.

Playing Sports Is Like Getting High For Free

There are good decisions and bad decisions. You may guess what kind of decision is to play sports. At first it looks good: you'll get more healthier, your fat ass will hopefully shrink and thanks to endorphines you'll get high for free. Unfortunately with sports it's like with high school. The only things you remember are the good ones. The bad ones like when you got locked by footballers inside the locker, naked of course, are hard to recall.

Ten Things I Learned About Open Source Management

  1. Bad prototype is better than great idea.
  2. Cooperate. Ask for opinions. Dictators die alone.
  3. Forcing someone to participate is very hard, forcing him to leave is very easy.
  4. Someone else's bad idea does not give you the right to call him "douchbag".
  5. If you want to have something done, you must do it yourself. Noone will engender your children.
  6. Don't hesitate to kill your infants. Even gods make mistakes and bad ideas.
  7. Never ever participate in religious wars. Noone wins them.
  8. If someone attacks you, don't retaliate. Your followers will do it for you.
  9. Frequent releases bring more attention. Attention in open source world is like money in that other world.
  10. Transfer your duties to others as early as possible. That will leave you more time for ego-searching on Google. I have plenty of time.
